PSV chances
After having recorded a 1-0 win over Real Murcia on Thursday, PSV met 1. FC Kaiserslautern in a friendly on Friday afternoon. The physically strong Germans, currently lying sixteenth in the Bundesliga, were well-organised, but PSV largely dominated the game, while Kaiserslautern hardly tested keeper Isaksson. After an uneventful first period, Fred Rutten’s team had the best chances after the break. Ten minutes after the restart, captain Ola Toivonen had a fine header well-saved and Kaiserslautern keeper Trapp again denied the Sweden international ten minutes later with another fine save. Matavz fired over the bar and Wijnaldum had a shot blocked. PSV almost snatched a late win, but substitute Depay hit the post in the last minute.
Jeremain Lens vies for the ball with a German player.
“Worked hard every day”
“The training camp was a great success”, said head coach Rutten after the game. “We’ve worked hard every day, which required a lot of physical labour, and should have rewarded ourselves with a win this afternoon. Dries Mertens was dropped from the squad as he had picked up a knock, but he will return to full training next week”, said Rutten, who did not ring the changes in the second half. “I handed playing time to the first-team regulars. They will start most games in the second half of the season”, explained Rutten. “They worked hard at the training camp in La Manga.”
Ola Toivonen had a fine header well-saved in the second half.
